CalCERTS & CCSE to Expand Building and Home Performance Training in California

SAN DIEGO, CA (Aug. 21, 2013) – In an effort to help increase the energy efficiency of homes and buildings in California, the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) and CalCERTS, Inc. have entered into a partnership agreement in July, to provide training for building science professionals and contractors in the San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego regions.

The training supports programs statewide to help homeowners and building owners understand and identify the most cost-effective and appropriate energy efficiency improvements. Residences and commercial buildings in the state account for about 65 percent of California’s total electrical consumption.

Both CalCERTS and CCSE have extensive experience providing building performance training and certification to hundreds of contractors, raters and other industry professionals. According to Jack Clark, CCSE director of programs, it is essential for California to develop a more inclusive approach to adopting energy efficiency technologies, applications and principles in our existing building stock.

“It is imperative that we support current and aspiring building performance professionals through workforce development and technical assistance as we move forward with new building standards, codes and legislation requiring greater energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions,” Clark said. “CCSE is excited to be partnering with CalCERTS in helping train individuals to improve how energy is used in California homes and buildings.”

Building performance professionals inspect, test and evaluate energy features, prepare energy assessments and make improvements that allow homeowners and building owners to save energy and money. They also work with local building department officials to ensure compliance with California’s Title 24 building energy-efficiency codes and standards.

Starting in fall 2013, CalCERTS and CCSE will provide classes in the areas of energy verification and diagnostic testing and whole house and building performance training taught by experts in building sciences. Further information about the training program is available at www.calcerts.com.

CalCERTS, Inc., and CCSE seek to transform the existing and entry level workforce knowledge, skills and abilities through standardized workforce education and field training programs. CalCERTS is proud to partner with CCSE to continue efforts to improve the clean energy workforce.

CalCERTS Director of Workforce Development Barbara Hernesman, and Jack Clark, CCSE Director of Programs, share the passion for a highly skilled and competent Building Performance and HERS Rater workforce.

“Pooling our resources and efforts is the next logical step for these two innovative and successful organizations. Clean Energy Workforce Training Partnerships is an effective model that CalCERTS and CCSE believe in and have embraced going forward”, said Barbara Hernesman.

CalCERTS, Inc. IS RECOGNIZED WITH A 2009
ENERGY STAR® LEADERSHIP IN HOUSING AWARD

CalCERTS, Inc. earns award for verifying new and existing homes that protect the environment through energy efficiency

FOLSOM, CA – CalCERTS, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a 2009 ENERGY STAR Leadership in Housing Award. This award recognizes the important contribution CalCERTS, Inc. has made to energy-efficient construction and environmental protection by verifying more than 2,300 ENERGY STAR qualified homes last year. Collectively, these homes will save our customers approximately $1,028,100.00 on utility bills each year.

The environmental benefits of these ENERGY STAR qualified homes are equal to the equivalent of:

  • Eliminating the emissions from 1,127 vehicles;
  • Saving 6,817,200 lbs of coal;
  • Planting 1,863 acres of trees; or
  • Saving the environment 13,369,900 pounds of CO2 per year.

To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20–30% more efficient than standard homes.

“This steady growth in Energy Star participation is a goal we take seriously and we are proud of our success. At CalCERTS we continue to grow and strengthen our partnership with EPA and we look forward to working with Energy Star and other programs that promote above-code energy efficiency in both new and existing homes," said Mike Bachand, President of CalCERTS, Inc.

ENERGY STAR qualified homes offer homebuyers all the features they want in a new or existing home, plus energy-saving features like effective insulation systems, high performance windows, tight construction and ducts, properly-sized and installed efficient heating and cooling equipment, efficient products, and third-party verification of energy performance.

“Most homebuyers focus on what's outside the walls,” said Sam Rashkin, National Director for EPA's ENERGY STAR Homes Program, “but they also need to look behind the walls for the energy-efficient features found in ENERGY STAR qualified homes that help ensure comfort, quiet, improved indoor air quality, and low utility bills for years to come.”
